Genetics and Hair Loss

Regular hair loss and alopecia have a different origination, and it’s very important to understand this fact for choosing the further treatment and prevention methods.

Alopecia is a hereditary disease. Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is another term for this condition. The symptoms of AGA includes shorter phase of active hair growth and eventual hair follicle shrinking. Androgenic alopecia can be developed since the young age, in this case hair starts thinning from the crown area of the head spreading further around. Aging women tend to have more severe balding conditions.

Temporary hair falling can be related to a non-genetic reason. The most common triggers are hormonal disorders, imbalanced diet, and stress. Telogen effluvium is a scientific term which is used for this kind of hair problem, it increases hair loss, but only during a certain period of time, leaving the follicles at the resting mode. Hair loss affects head surface equally, and not just particular areas like with alopecia, for example. Right after the cause or trigger of hair falling is gone, hair is growing back and look healthy.

genetic hair loss

Alopecia areata is caused by autoimmune disorder. Hair is falling in precise patches, leaving bald spots and causing a possible total baldness later. As soon as you noticed appearance of bald spots you should call the doctor.

The first step for a successful treatment is to find out the origination of your hair loss. Before changing the diet or taking some other measures, make sure it’s not a hereditary disease. According to statistics every third woman is exposed to losing her hair at some point.

So hair loss is not only men’s concern. The condition starts with receding hair line, or around the crown area of the head – there are several common patterns. When with women hair thinning begins from the upper area and getting more visible at the widening areas.

Why does hair stop growing?

Usually a person is born with 100 000 of hair follicles, this amount is not a permanent number, and it will go under the changes during life. When follicle is in active phase hair will be growing for several years. After the growing cycle is over, the follicle is staying in resting mode and hair is shed, until the next active phase when everything starts from the very beginning.

When hair falls due to the inheritance, the life cycle of hair is slowly getting shorter, until the follicle shrinks and can’t provide a hair growth anymore. Laser cap can extend hair life cycle and stop hair loss.

How does genetics work?

According to the popular old wife’s tale that hair loss comes only from one of the parents. It has been scientifically verified, that this condition can be equally inherited from the both – mother and father.
