11 Causes of Hair Breakage

No one wants to have thin and weak hair. But if that happens, don’t get upset. You should analyze the possible reasons and see the trichologist, and maybe try changing some of your habits. Sometimes it might be enough to just follow these recommendations to save the beauty of your hair.

  1. Don’t take a hot shower because high temperatures may cause hair loss. This happens because of scalp irritation and follicle damage. As a result, your hair and skin are over dried, and the natural moisturizer is rinsed. To avoid this, you need to take a warm shower with a medium temperature and rinse your hair with cold water.
  2. Don’t use hot tools for hair styling, since it violates the water balance and increases hair breakage. Don’t overuse hairdryers or use heat protection products for your hair.
  3. Don’t exhaust your body with starvation and dangerous diets. One of the symptoms of anorexia is severe hair loss. To avoid it, you should eat healthy, consuming foods rich in proteins. For example, chicken, lentils, and beans. For normal body functioning, 46 grams of protein per day is enough. It should be about 25-30% of your daily total amount of calories. Don’t forget about vitamins and microelements, which are very important not only for hair growth, but for the health in general.

Hair care

  1. It is not recommended to comb your hair right after the shower, when it’s still damp. It makes hair brittle and vulnerable. If you let your locks dry slightly by wiping it with a towel, you can avoid this negative effect.
  2. Hair, when pulled up into a tight tail of braid, is damaging for follicles. It can lead to the traction alopecia, a disease which makes normal hair growth impossible. You should wear more loose hairstyles that won’t overstretch your hair.
  3. Frequent use of hair styling products can over dry your hair, making it brittle due to the high level of alcohol in the cosmetic. When choosing between hair spray and a gentle gel, choose the second one.
  4. Taking oral contraceptives can also cause hair loss. It happens due to the high level of androgens in the drug. That’s why it is better to take pills with a low androgens index. The first step is to consult a physician.
  5. If you have severe itching, don’t scratch your head since it can damage not only the scalp, but also the hair follicles. If the itchiness lasts for a long time, you should consider using special shampoos containing tea tree oil and zinc, which will eliminate the discomfort. If those available products don’t help, then you need a consultation with a specialist.

Sun

  1. If you’re planning on spending a lot of time in the sun, protect your hair. You can do this with the help of hats, scarfs, and shawls. Radiation can have a positive effect only in moderate dosages, like when wearing a laser cap, which works by using low level laser therapy (LLLT). The cap strengthens hair (preventing hair loss) and treats baldness.
  2. Don’t wash your hair too often, since it can clog follicles and inhibit normal hair growth, due to the accumulation of cosmetic products around the follicles. It is preferable to wash hair every other day, doing it more often only when necessary to not clog scalp pores.
  3. Taking some drugs, such as antidepressants or hormones, can be a reason for hair loss. It happens because of the harm to the hair life cycle. If you notice such side effects, you should ask your trichologist to switch to an alternative medications, which doesn’t have those effects.
